Georgian sterling silver cream jug with beaded rim and pedestal base - Samuel Godbehere & Edward Wigan (1796) - Kermakko - .925 hopea

A refined late-18th century sterling silver cream jug dating to the George III period. Formed in the Neoclassical taste, the jug stands on a square pedestal foot with stepped moulding, rising to a slender vase-shaped body and a delicate scrolling handle. The upper rim is decorated with a beaded edge, a characteristic feature of the period. The interior shows visible hand-raising and hammer work, typical of late 18th-century silversmithing before widespread mechanisation. One side bears an original period monogram, finely engraved in elegant script. The maker’s mark is a documented overstrike. In this period, London silversmiths often purchased part-finished bodies to be completed in-house. When this occurred, the receiving workshop legally overstruck the original mark with their own to certify responsibility for assay. Here, the earlier mark has been overstruck with the Godbehere & Wigan partnership punch. Maker: Samuel Godbehere & Edward Wigan Assay office: London Date: 1796 86.12 g / 2.77 t oz 11 cm tall 8.5 cm from spout to handle 3.1 cm at widest part of body 4.8 x 4.8 cm at base Very good antique condition. Please take time to view all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description and provide an accurate representation of the item’s details and condition.
