A Diwan most commonly refers to a collection of poems by a single author. The word itself comes from Persian, originally meaning a government council or register, and was later applied to a collection of poems. These are often grouped together as part of an album called a muraqqa, the arabic word for patchwork and. prized for their artistic value. The illuminations are typical of the arabesque style and particularly fetching as they are written on a gold background. Loosely translated, the right folio in paraphrase reads, 'What is the Turanian way - cultural, social, and political concepts associated with the ancient geographical region of Turan (Central Asia) - that is alive in me?
