Ethnic Musical Instrument – Carved Spike Fiddle (Sarangi Type) with Genuine Silver Inlay – Northern India / Nepal – Early–Mid 20th Century – With Bow
A rare hand-carved traditional spike fiddle from the Himalayan region, decorated with genuine silver inlay (tarkashi) forming dense geometric motifs across the entire body. The instrument is carved from a single block of wood, with a natural animal-skin resonator and multiple tuning pegs. The accompanying bow is original and decorated with matching inlay patterns.
The silver inlay decoration includes fine circles, dot rows, triangles, and line borders, representing a level of craftsmanship not typical for tourist-grade pieces. This suggests the instrument may have been made for ceremonial, ritual, or high-status use rather than as a simple folk instrument.
Due to age-related wear and the fragile condition of the skin and strings, the piece is offered as a decorative/ethnographic artifact, not a functioning musical instrument.
Condition
• Wear and patina consistent with age
• Skin covering partially damaged
• Some cracks and losses to wood edges
• Pegbox intact with original pegs
• Bow complete but hair fragile
• Silver inlay
