About the artist
Borja Campoy is a Spanish philosopher and artist, founder of the sculptural project Neo Ídolos.
His work is built from philosophy and a Hispano-Greek-Roman vision aimed at recovering greatness, virtue, heroism, beauty and the elevation of the human being.
Neo Ídolos does not propose an archaeological reproduction of the past, but the contemporary recovery of the ideals that built classical tradition and Hispanic civilization. Philosophy, history, mythology, Christianity and Greco-Roman art integrate into a sculptural language of their own, characterized by monumental anatomies, geometric faces, metallic finishes and figures conceived as archetypes.
The central principle of his work can be summarized in one idea:
Heroes are a mirror.
The great characters, myths and symbols of the past do not appear as dead images, but as representations of what the human being can become.
Concept of the work
The Philosopher King represents the union between power, knowledge and self-mastery.
The work is based on the Platonic ideal that the just city can only be governed by one who knows the good and has first learned to govern oneself.
The character does not represent a specific historical monarch. It is an archetype: the sovereign whose authority does not come solely from the crown, force or conquest, but from reason, temperance and inner sovereignty.
His golden gaze represents the intelligence capable of penetrating beyond appearances. The stern, geometric face expresses will, introspection and mastery. The crown functions not only as a symbol of rank, but as an outer manifestation of inner dignity conquered.
The golden ornamentation extends from the arm to the chest and shoulder, symbolically uniting thought and action. The philosopher does not remain isolated in contemplation: he turns knowledge into will and will into deed.
The changing finish of the body alters its tone according to light and point of observation. This visual transformation alludes to the depth of reality and the need to observe it from different perspectives before forming a judgment.
Thus the work embodies the ideal of power subjected to wisdom: not a governance by those who wish to dominate others, but by those who have first managed to master their own passions.
Creation process and materials
The sculpture has been created using a traditional sculptural reproduction process by casting.
From the original model, a mold is made that allows precise reproduction of the facial expression, the crown, the ornamental reliefs and the geometric shapes of the piece.
Each copy is manufactured in polystone by rotomolding. During this process, the material is distributed inside the mold to form the sculpture’s structure, maintaining high definition of volumes and surface details.
Once demolded, each piece is inspected and worked on individually. Joints, minor irregularities and marks inherent to the casting process are corrected by hand before preparing the surface for painting.
The sculpture is fully painted and finished by hand.
The main finish uses a color-shift paint, capable of producing chromatic variations depending on angle, intensity and lighting type. This effect combines with gold finishes applied to the crown, the eyes, the arm and the torso ornamentation.
Lights, shadows, transitions and reflections are applied manually to reinforce the depth of the reliefs and the sculptural presence of the character.
Due to the artisanal process, there may be slight color, texture or application differences between different copies. These variations are not considered defects but features of an edition produced and finished individually.
Limited edition, numbering and authenticity
The Philosopher King is part of a limited edition of 25 copies.
Each sculpture is identified by an individual numbering ranging from 1/25 to 25/25. Once the edition is completed, no new copies will be produced for this version, materials or finish.
