Little Birds Perching on Azalea Tree - 黒光茂樹 Kuromitsu Shigeki (1909–1993) - Japani (Ei pohjahintaa)
黒光茂樹 Kuromitsu Shigeki (1909–1993) Kuromitsu Shigeki was a Japanese painter born in Ehime Prefecture in 1909. He studied under Kaneshima Keika and graduated from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting (today’s Kyoto City University of Arts). His career began in 1934, when his work Urita was accepted into the Teiten (Imperial Exhibition). He exhibited regularly at the Shin Bunten and Nitten, receiving the Special Prize (Hakujusha / Asakura Prize) in 1953 for Seidō (Bronze), and later the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award in 1987. Renowned for his meticulous depictions of nature, Kuromitsu specialized in landscapes, flora, and still-life subjects, executed with refined brushwork and strong composition. He also completed large-scale gold-leaf wall paintings for Myōshin-ji’s Reiun-in temple in Kyoto. His works are admired for their precision and lyrical atmosphere, making them highly valued in the Japanese art market.

This elegant hanging scroll captures a tranquil spring moment: a small bird perched delicately on a blooming azalea branch, rendered with refined brushwork and soft coloration. The composition evokes themes of seasonal renewal, harmony with nature, and quiet observation—hallmarks of classical Japanese aesthetics.
The scroll is signed and sealed by Kuromitsu Shigeki, a Kyoto-trained painter known for his meticulous depictions of flora and natural subjects. Mounted in patterned silk, the scroll reflects the lyrical atmosphere and compositional strength characteristic of mid-20th-century Nihonga. A graceful example of Japanese seasonal art, ideal for collectors of bird-and-flower motifs, spring themes, or works rooted in traditional aesthetics.
