黒光茂樹 Kuromitsu Shigeki (1909–1993) Kuromitsu Shigeki was a Japanese painter born in Ehime Prefecture in 1909. He studied under Kaneshima Keika and graduated from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting (today’s Kyoto City University of Arts). His career began in 1934, when his work Urita was accepted into the Teiten (Imperial Exhibition). He exhibited regularly at the Shin Bunten and Nitten, receiving the Special Prize (Hakujusha / Asakura Prize) in 1953 for Seidō (Bronze), and later the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Award in 1987. Renowned for his meticulous depictions of nature, Kuromitsu specialized in landscapes, flora, and still-life subjects, executed with refined brushwork and strong composition. He also completed large-scale gold-leaf wall paintings for Myōshin-ji’s Reiun-in temple in Kyoto.
