Yhdistynyt kuningaskunta - 8 Englannin ja Walesin linnaa teos J.M.W. Turnerin; Engraved by S Fisher, W Miller, W R Smith & J T Willmore - Lancaster; Kilgarren; Prudoe; Tremalon; Carisbrook; Pembroke; Bernard; Ludlow - 1821-1850

Lancaster; Kilgarren Castle, Penbroke; Prudoe Castle, Northumbeland; Tremalon Castle, Cornwall; Carisbrook Castle; Isle of Wight; Pembroke Castle, Wales; Bernard Castle, Durham; Ludlow Castle, Shropshire. The series 'Picturesque Views of England and Wales. From Drawings by J.M.W. Turner' was an enterprise of the publisher Charles Heath in collaboration with Jennings & Co., on which Turner was engaged from 1825. Ninety-six views were published between 1827 and 1838, of a proposed one hundred and twenty. According to original advertisements, the edition was limited to sixty impressions on chine, of which thirty were sold with an impression of the etched state. In 1831, Jennings was forced to withdraw from the publication and sold his share to Moon, Boys and Graves. By 1838, Heath was in serious financial difficulties and Longman's, who had taken over a half-share from Moon, Boys and Graves decided to close the publication: they issued the views that had been engraved by that date in two volumes with text by H E Lloyd, at a reduced price and then put the plates and remaining stock up for auction, where Turner made a last minute appearance and bought it up for £3000. There are several related drawings in BM P&D. Many of the plates were developed from drawings made earlier than 1825 and engraved under Turner's close supervision, mainly by printmakers who had been working with him for a decade and more, supplemented by new recruits. Bibliographic references Rawlinson 1913 / The engraved work of J M W Turner (235) (British Museum) On wove paper. Some foxing at the edges and on the versos.
