Seiko - Empire (Export Pocket Watch) - 1900-1949

This is a rare early Japanese pocket watch produced by Seiko, sold under the Empire name for overseas markets. The Empire series was manufactured from the early 20th century through roughly the first quarter of the century and represents one of Seiko’s most historically important mechanical watch lines. These watches were developed as a high-quality alternative to traditional imported timekeepers, utilizing an anchor escapement and fully domestically manufactured movement components. At the time, this was a major technological achievement for Japan’s watch industry. This particular example is believed to be an export model, as evidenced by the absence of Seikosha markings on the movement and the English “Empire” dial signature. During this period, Seiko produced a number of watches specifically for international markets, often omitting domestic branding while maintaining the same technical standards. Historically, the movement architecture used in the Empire pocket watches later formed the technical foundation for Japan’s first wristwatch, the Laurel, making this model a direct ancestor of modern Japanese wristwatches. As such, Empire pocket watches occupy a crucial position in the evolution of Japanese horology. The dial features large, highly legible Arabic numerals and a classic small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, reflecting practical design priorities of the era. The overall layout emphasizes clarity and balance, qualities essential for daily use in the early 1900s. The hinged case bears a “SPECIAL” engraving with a lion emblem, a marking also found on certain high-grade Swiss and export-oriented cases of the period. Additionally, faint case markings consistent with K.W.C. Co. (Keystone Watch Case Co.) can be observed, suggesting the possibility of an imported or export-grade case used for international distribution. While definitive documentation is scarce, such combinations are well known among early export pocket watches. The case diameter measures approximately 42 mm, giving the watch a strong and substantial presence. The watch is accompanied by a metal chain, approximately 31 cm in length, which will be included with the watch. The movement is a manual-winding mechanical caliber. Running at the time of listing. As with all antique watches of this age, long-term accuracy, stability, and durability cannot be guaranteed. This is not merely a timekeeping instrument, but a historically significant artifact representing the formative years of Japan’s modern watchmaking industry. The watch will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking for safe delivery.
