New York Beat" is a collection of works by Brooklyn-based graphic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, a legendary painter who died of acute drug addiction at the age of 27. A painter without a studio who could express his art anywhere, Basquiat was a close friend and collaborator of Andy Warhol, and was a central figure in the downtown art scene of the 1980s. This book is a visual book of the legendary film “Downtown 81,” which was shot in early 1980 when Basquiat was only 20 years old, and was put into storage due to the bankruptcy of its backers. Basquiat, who had not even held a solo exhibition at the time, was selected to star in the story that vividly depicts the art and music scene in New York, a fiction about an artist without money who wanders downtown dreaming of a dream. This is a collection of works that condenses the American culture of the 80s, including New Wave, New Painting, and graffiti. Petitgra Publishing
