Nuremberg Chronicles - Hartmann Schedel -Michael Wolgemut - Damiata - 1493

Original leaf from the famous incunabula "Liber chronicarum" (The Nuremberg Chronicle), published by Hartmann Schedel 1493 in Nuremberg. This original wood-cut is from the FIRST EDITION which was in Latin language, while the later second edition of the same year was in German. Produced in the workshop of Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, where Albrecht Dürer apprenticed—he may have contributed to some woodcuts. Depicted is an imaginary view of Damiata, modern-day Dumyat or Damietta in Egypt, which is located on the Nile delta on the Damietta branch of the Nile close to the Mediterranean Sea. While topographically not accurate, this very early view reflects the medieval European imagination of distant cities. Damietta with its strategic position was the gateway to Egypt. It gained special importance during the FIFTH CRUSADE, when the Crusaders believed that if they captured Damietta and pushed toward Cairo, the Sultan would be forced to trade Jerusalem in exchange. Verso side CCX depicts three saints, two of them named as St. Clara, and St. Antonio of Padua, With a tiny pinhole on the bottom margins. Very good and robust paper quality with extremely faint age-toning on lower margins. VERY GOOD CONDITION. Size of whole leaf: 29 x 45.5 cm (untrimmed full margins) (We ship with registered airmail, to Italy with EMS courier. Arrival time 10-30 days, depending on destination)
