Egy fa szobra. - Baulé - Elefántcsontpart (Nincs minimálár)

This Baule figure from the Gohitafla region of central Côte d’Ivoire belongs to a group of works known as colonial figures, which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an artistic response to profound social changes. Within Baule art, these depictions occupy a special position, as they combine traditional sculptural concepts with new manifestations of authority, social prestige, and cultural encounter. They document less specific individuals than the perception of a changing world under colonial influence. Incl stand. The standing male figure is depicted in a serene frontal pose. His arms hanging at his sides and his gaze directed straight ahead lend him a dignified presence. Particularly striking are the white-pigmented eyes with black-rimmed pupils, which give the sculpture an unusual alertness. The slightly downturned corners of the mouth, on the other hand, create an expression of controlled seriousness. The clothing clearly distinguishes the figure from classic Baule depictions. The blue-trimmed shirt and shorts allude to colonial or post-colonial clothing styles and reflect the influence of European fashion on local notions of modernity and social status. Even the white-highlighted fingernails are meticulously rendered, underscoring the ceremonial nature of the depiction. The angular base with light blue and red accents forms the foundation of the composition. Deep cracks in the base and left foot, as well as another crack running from the back of the head down the spine, attest to the work's great age. Along with signs of wear and minor losses, they bear witness to the figure's long history and lend it a striking historical authenticity. The angular base with light blue and red accents forms the basis of the composition.
