Ben Viegers (1886-1947) - Volendam Harbour Scene

✦ FREE SHIPPING WITHIN THE EU ✦ RATED EXCELLENT An evocative Dutch harbour scene by Ben Viegers (Bernardus Petrus Viegers), masterfully rendered in oil with confident, lively brushwork and a luminous palette that captures the distinctive atmosphere of Volendam’s bustling quay and traditional sailing vessels. The composition reflects Viegers’ lifelong engagement with water, light, and everyday life in the Netherlands. Born in The Hague in 1886, Viegers received his earliest artistic training in his maternal grandfather’s coach-builder’s workshop, where he learned drawing, paint mixing and decorative techniques—skills that laid the foundation for his career as a painter, draughtsman, and pastellist. He studied briefly at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague and was influenced by his friend and mentor Charles Dankmeijer. From 1921 he was a member of the Haagse Kunstkring, placing him in contact with leading artists of the period. Viegers’ oeuvre was wide-ranging, encompassing landscapes, city- and harbour views, still lifes, and beach scenes. In 1938 he relocated with his wife to Nunspeet, where he continued to work outdoors (en plein air) until his death in 1947; a street in Nunspeet now bears his name in recognition of his contribution to Dutch art.
