“Satsukibare Soga Uramichi – Complete” (Ansei 2 / 1855)
Written by Ryokutei Senryū – Illustrated by Kazumasa Ichiyō
A highly desirable kusazōshi (early Japanese illustrated storybook) from the late Edo period, published in Ansei 2 (1855). Written by the noted author Ryokutei Senryū and illustrated by Kazumasa Ichiyō, this work is an excellent example of mid-19th-century popular literature combining dynamic storytelling with vivid woodblock-printed artwork.
This volume is complete, featuring a striking cover illustration in rich Edo-period colors.
Its compact format—approx. 17.8 × 11.8 cm—is typical of kusazōshi, making it highly collectible.
Condition
Overall in good condition for its age, with the following characteristics:
Expected age-related stains, foxing, soiling, and rubbing
Stains and handwritten ink marks on the back cover
Binding remains stable, and the interior prints retain good color and impression
Despite these time-worn aspects, the book survives far better than many kusazōshi from the same era.
Furthermore, this title rarely appears even in the Japanese market, making it a particularly attractive opportunity for collectors of Edo-period illustrated books.
A genuine and highly scarce kusazōshi that captures the atmosphere of popular literature during the late Edo period.
