Studioso di storia dell'arte italiana ed, in particolare, della pittura napoletana del XVII secolo il maestro Stefano Trapanese si ispira al grande Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) ed ai pittori del barocco italiano. La scelta di abbinare i due motivi del libro e dell’aquila, nel dare continuità a un canone iconografico consolidato, interviene a favore di una valorizzazione della figura di Giovanni nel suo portato teologico, sostenuto dal suo impegno scritturale, come riconosciuto da Sant’Agostino: «Giovanni… si volge soprattutto alla divinità del Signore per la quale egli è uguale al Padre. Questa divinità si propose d’inculcare con la massima cura nel suo Vangelo, e vi si dedicò nella misura che ritenne sufficiente agli uomini. Pertanto egli si leva molto più in alto che non gli altri tre [evangelisti]. Ti par di vedere i tre primi quasi trattenersi sulla terra con Cristo uomo, lui invece oltrepassare le nebbie che coprono la superficie terrestre e raggiungere il cielo etereo…».
Trova così ragione anche l’atteggiamento del santo, con lo sguardo fisso verso la luce, a tradire quella qualità che è propria dell’aquila, in una identificazione proposta a vantaggio della visualizzazione del portato contemplativo del mandato evangelico giovanneo.
Il quadro è dotato di preziosa cornice in legno dorato a mano e che aumenta le dimensioni del dipinto a 60 cm x 53 cm (19,6 in x 16,9 in) e targhetta in ottone recante autore e titolo dell'opera.

A scholar of Italian art history, particularly 17th-century Neapolitan painting, Stefano Trapanese draws inspiration from the great Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi) and the painters of the Italian Baroque. His paintings are all original oil on canvas. He selects his models, dresses them, and poses them for a portrait.
This painting is one of 12 originals depicting the holy apostles of Jesus Christ. They are available for sale individually or as a set upon specific request.
The decision to combine the two motifs of the book and the eagle, in giving continuity to a consolidated iconographic canon, intervenes in favor of an enhancement of the figure of John in his theological bearing, supported by his scriptural commitment, as recognized by Saint Augustine : «John… turns above all to the divinity of the Lord by which he is equal to the Father. This divinity intended to inculcate his Gospel with the utmost care in him, and devoted himself to it to the extent that he deemed sufficient for men. Therefore he rises much higher than the other three [evangelists]. You seem to see the first three almost staying on earth with the man Christ, him instead going beyond the mists that cover the earth's surface and reaching the ethereal sky…».
Thus the attitude of the saint also finds reason, with his gaze fixed on the light, to betray that quality which is proper to the eagle, in an identification proposed to the advantage of visualizing the contemplative scope of the Johannine evangelical mandate.
The painting comes with a precious hand-gilded wooden frame which increases the size of the painting to 60 cm x 53 cm (19.6 in x 16.9 in) and a brass plate bearing the author and title of the work..
