Chiara Stevanella - La Mente e l'Anima

Mind and Soul are two essential parts that compose us and are crucial for our psychophysical and spiritual well-being. I explain this today through this painting, which is part of the series I've named 'Dream Becomes Oracle. https://www.artekiara.it/2023/02/22/il-sogno-diventa-oracolo/ This painting was created in 2014 and is a highly conceptual piece for me, carrying a metaphorical significance beyond its aesthetic appearance. In life, especially during times of crisis when we have to reconsider who we are and how we are, the mind can play tricks on us, condemning us to loops of negative, recursive, and destabilizing thoughts. These thoughts disintegrate our integrity and self-esteem, making us fearful, restless, and at times even helpless and fragile. What renders us so fragile is the fragmentation caused by thoughts. The inability to observe them from the outside, to detach, to mitigate or slow them down. Normally, the mind is divided by a myriad of thoughts, leaving us often unaware of our surroundings and even ourselves. When our minds are preoccupied with producing negative thoughts, they form real monsters that can overpower even the strongest of individuals. True integrity and strength lie in understanding our non-mechanical nature. Thoughts are mechanical; they are products of the mind. Understanding our spiritual nature, feeling part of a larger design, comprehending that we can free ourselves from the world's mechanics through prayer, through meditation, is what can save us. The white horse fragmenting like a mosaic into a thousand pieces represents the mind, the ego self-destructing into fragments. It sinks overwhelmed by fearful trees resembling monstrous demons attacking it. The shattered mirror symbolizes the fact that the world we immerse ourselves reflects our inner world and mirrors what resides within us. Thus, if we are frightened and gloomy, this external world will reflect our inner state. This illusion confuses us to the extent that it reaches even our hearts; even our emotions can be manipulated by the constructions of an uncontrolled mind. The water, guardian of life, embraces the scattered fragments. On the opposite shore, healthy green plants grow, the white dove, guardian of the soul, blossoms on the shore, motionless and intact. The white dove is a childhood memory for me, as it's a specific statuette of the Mexican Paloma. With its beauty, it evokes in me a sense of integrity and composure that reassures me, as it remains undisturbed by monstrous presences, appearing indifferent, unaffected. MATERIALS The painting is created on a plywood panel prepared with textured quartz paint applied with a spatula for a tactile effect. The painting is created using acrylic paints and pure pigments mixed with acrylic medium. Mirror fragments and semi-precious stones are applied also.
