Rosenthal Studio-Line Box + Plate by Johan van Loon – 1987 – Sculptural Postmodern Design in White, Red, Pink and Gold
A vibrant and beautifully coordinated duo designed by Johan van Loon for Rosenthal Studio-Line in 1987. These two pieces — a lidded box (model 3790/2) and a long oval plate — showcase van Loon’s distinctive sculptural language combined with the expressive colour fields that defined the most imaginative years of Rosenthal’s Studio-Line.
Both pieces feature a matte porcelain ground with raised linear texture and boldly abstract patches of red, pink, lavender, and metallic gold. The decor wraps organically around the forms, creating a fluid interplay between surface and volume. This is van Loon at his most playful and architectural: modern, graphic, and tactile.
Box – Model 3790/2
Height approx. 6 cm, diameter approx. 13 cm
A cylindrical lidded box with sculptural relief on both container and lid. The multicolour decor appears like a floating puzzle of organic shapes, interrupted by crisp ribbed texture — a signature contrast in van Loon’s porcelain work. Fully marked underneath with Rosenthal Studio-Line stamp and designer signature.
Plate – Oval Serving Dish
Length approx. 31 cm, width approx. 15 cm
An elongated, elegantly curved plate with the same raised relief and colour-blocked pattern. The matte white ground provides a striking contrast to the warm, saturated tones of the decor.
About the Designer
Johan van Loon (1934–2019), one of the most influential Dutch ceramic artists of the 20th century, brought a textile sensibility into porcelain design. His forms for Rosenthal combine sculptural rhythm, folded structures, and richly textured surfaces. Van Loon’s collaborations with Rosenthal during the 1980s and 1990s remain among the company’s most collectable and innovative periods.
Condition
Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition with minimal, age-appropriate signs of handling. No chips, cracks, or repairs.
This is a highly collectible duo that reflects the imaginative energy of Rosenthal’s late Studio-Line decades — sophisticated, sculptural, and unmistakably postmodern. Ideal for collectors of contemporary porcelain, design enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a bold and refined statement piece.
