Trained from childhood as a potter, he later studied Japanese painting under Yamamoto Shunkyo before returning to ceramics. At the age of thirty-six he began producing ceramic dolls and adopted the artist name Tōen. Drawing inspiration from Chinese and Japanese classics as well as Noh theatre, he developed a distinctive world of low-fired ceramic figures known as Higashiyama dolls. His exceptional mastery of Kyoto ware techniques earned him the Order of the Rising Sun, Sixth Class, and he is regarded as one of the distinguished ceramic masters of the Showa period. The cup is finished in a traditional tri-colour glaze, an ancient technique known for blending flowing tones of green, amber and yellow in soft, organic transitions. The surface displays a fine crackle texture typical of low-temperature firing, giving the piece a warm and lively character. The foot bears the artist’s mark, and the original wooden box is also signed and sealed. Very good condition with minimal wear. Please check the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 3.9 cm W 6.7 cm D 6.7 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
