In asta un affascinante lotto composto da due frazioni di Penny medievali inglesi in argento.
Questi esemplari sono testimoni diretti dell'economia quotidiana del Medioevo, essendo stati intenzionalmente "tagliati" all'epoca per creare spiccioli (Halfpenny o Farthing) in un periodo in cui il Penny era l'unica denominazione circolante.

Il lotto include monete battute sotto due dei più iconici sovrani della storia inglese.

1. Riccardo I "Cuor di Leone" (The Lionheart) | 1189-1199
Una moneta battuta durante l'epoca delle Crociate.

2. Enrico III (Henry III) | 1216-1272
Uno dei regni più lunghi del medioevo inglese.

Descrizione: Dritto con porzione del busto coronato. Rovescio con la caratteristica "Voided Long Cross" (croce lunga vuota al centro), introdotta per facilitare proprio il taglio della moneta in parti uguali.

Il fascino del "Cut for Change": Nel XII e XIII secolo in Inghilterra non venivano coniate regolarmente monete più piccole del Penny. Per le piccole transazioni quotidiane (comprare pane o birra), la gente comune tagliava fisicamente il Penny in due (Halfpenny) o in quattro (Farthing). Questi pezzi non sono monete danneggiate, ma frammenti di storia economica che hanno circolato realmente nelle mani del popolo medievale.

Medieval England - Lot of 2 Silver Pennies: Richard I "The Lionheart" & Henry III
Lot Description:

Up for auction is a fascinating lot of two medieval English silver pennies.
These coins are direct evidence of the daily economy of the Middle Ages, having been intentionally "cut" to create halfpenny or farthing coins at a time when the penny was the only denomination in circulation.

The lot includes coins struck under two of the most iconic rulers in English history.

1. Richard I "The Lionheart" | 1189-1199
A coin struck during the era of the Crusades.

Material: Silver
Dating: 1189-1199

Diameter: 19 mm

Mint/Coinmaster: Not fully legible due to the cut

Description: Obverse with a portion of the King's frontal bust holding a scepter.
Reverse with a portion of a Short Cross.

Numismatic Note: Coins of Richard I generally retain the name "HENRICVS" of his father, Henry II, distinguishable by the style of the bust and the active coiners.

2. Henry III (Henry III) | 1216-1272
One of the longest reigns of the English Middle Ages.

Dating: 1216-1272 (Probably Class 3 or 5)

Mint/Coinmaster: Not fully legible due to the cut.

Description: Obverse with a portion of a crowned bust. Reverse with the distinctive "Voided Long Cross" (long cross hollow in the center), introduced to facilitate cutting the coin into equal parts.

The allure of the "Cut for Change": In the 12th and 13th centuries, coins smaller than the Penny were not regularly minted in England. For small everyday transactions (buying bread or beer), common people physically cut the Penny in half (Halfpenny) or quarters (Farthing). These pieces are not damaged coins, but fragments of economic history that actually circulated in the hands of medieval people.
