19th C. Bronze Plaque “Philosopher” – High Relief Grand Tour Portrait – 50×42 mm
19th Century Bronze Portrait Plaque – “Philosopher / Thinker”
Hand-Cast Grand Tour Era – High Relief Bronze with Original Gilding
Dimensions: approx. 50 × 42 mm
Offered here is a beautiful hand-cast 19th-century bronze portrait plaque, depicting a bearded philosopher or classical thinker in left-facing profile.
This refined piece belongs to the Grand Tour decorative tradition, where artists reproduced antique and Renaissance busts into small collectible bronzes.
This example shows excellent modelling, deep relief and very attractive surfaces, with traces of original fire-gilding still visible on the face, beard and drapery — a sign of quality typical of mid-19th-century workshop production.
The back is hollowed, with the original central mounting pin still present, indicating that the plaque was once mounted on a luxury frame, box, or small piece of furniture.
