Shield - Bronze - Peurise - Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia

Description
Shield - Bronze - Peurise - Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia
Late 19th century - Excellent

A rare round bronze Aceh shield - peurise teumaga. Rare because it has 7 nodules with a star around it. These are characteristic of most Aceh shields and give them a spherical look. They also exist with 4 to 9 nodules. A shield with 7 stars is associated with the constellation of the Pleiades Tuju Bintang, a sacred constellation for Aceh. It is rare, because it was usually worn by the (spiritual) leader of a battle group. Also special is the finely driven circle in the round centre piece with a ring of triangles around it. This centrepiece was made separately and later forged on the shield. Practical goal of the nodules was for an opponent's sabre to ricochet. The Peurise was carried on the back. In battle on the left arm, with a hold of 2 braided rattan ropes. It will be carefully packed and sent with registered mail.
