Bellissimo esemplare di echinoderma proveniente dal Marocco. Questi animali marini sono stati tra le prime forme viventi ad abitare il pianeta. Ritrovamento Sahara nord occidentale.
I livelli del mare erano ai massimi livelli dell'era paleozoica durante il periodo Ordoviciano e le temperature dell'acqua superavano i 110° F. Queste condizioni consentirono alla vita marina di prosperare e portarono a un'ampia diversificazione. Fu durante questo periodo che le stelle marine (della classe Asteroidea) e le stelle fragili (della classe Ophiuroidea) si differenziarono.

Le stelle marine, o stelle marine, tendono ad avere zampe più larghe e più collegate tra loro. Avevano piedi tubolari che consentivano loro di muoversi. Le stelle fragili, d'altro canto, avevano braccia più strette e flessibili che muovevano per muoversi sul fondale marino. Il tipo di stelle fragili fossili rinvenute in Marocco appartengono al genere Ophiura e sono caratterizzate da un corpo a forma di disco con lunghe e sottili zampe disposte radialmente attorno ad esso. Nelle placche fossili le loro braccia ondulate danno l'impressione di danzare.

Sebbene molte stelle marine siano carnivore e si nutrano di piccoli pesci, ostriche e molluschi, alcune stelle marine sono onnivore e integrano la loro dieta con particelle organiche come le alghe. Poiché le stelle marine vivono nei nostri mari e oceani da quasi ½ miliardo di anni con pochissimi cambiamenti nella loro anatomia, sono un classico esempio di ciò che viene definito un "fossile vivente".
