Beautifully patinated old mask. Some explanations are about antlers (or arms) but it is also said that this is a complex form of hairstyle, in this case especially because of the faces and eyes that are incorporated into it! Very nicely carved mask with beautiful traces of old age and patina of use.
African mask from the KWELE tribe who lives in the extended forest areas along the border of Gabon and Cameroon.
The masks are related to the Beete (“bwété” beneficial forces), which maintained social order, they are also used in initiation rites and at the end of mourning periods.
Some of these masks have a serene expression, others have a more cheerful character.
