First edition of Amyot's famous translation of Plutarch's remarkable work, a true masterpiece in French, from which Montaigne drew his inspiration for his Essays.

Published in Paris by Michel de Vascosan in folio format 41x27cm.

Rare, precious and well aligned copy, large margins. In very good condition, crisp. The print is very beautiful with large historiated initials engraved on wood, the title shows traces of manipulations, two small tears to the edge, ex libris ms barred and one by Jacob de la Ramisse (?) from 1697. The rest in excellent condition except for the very slight trace of water stain on the edge of a few sheets, barely noticeable.

Contemporary binding in full calfskin, restored. Ribbed spine adorned with fleurons within compartments, lace framing the covers with a beautiful plate in the centre, all edges gilt.

ancient wisdom, the moral works of Plutarch will be put to good use in the
hands of western Renaissance philosophers. These texts deeply influenced Montaigne
and
his followers. Arbour, 4923 ."Le charme du style, la pureté de la langue ne sont pas des moindres
attraits pour ce livre. Amyot fut un des créateurs de cette belle langue du XVIe siècle, originale
et naïve, souple, abondante, colorée, naturelle, pittoresque et harmonieuse, et sa traduction,
malgré quelques infidélités, na pas été effacée depuis et est restée comme un des plus beaux
monuments de notre vieille littérature. Elle a, dit Racine, dans le vieux style du traducteur, une
grâce que je ne crois pas pouvoir être égalée dans notre langue moderne"
