Klapmuts bowl - Porselein - Egret mark - Wanli (1573-1619)

A very rare high quality Klapmuts bowl from the Wanli period, marked with a egret mark. The fine silvery underglaze blue cobalt decoration depicts a center scene of two chrysanthemums in a rocky and fenced garden scene (similar to REF 2). The four ogival panels are filled with flower (similar to REF 3.1) alternated by panels containing a butterfly among flowers (similar to REF 1.2). The flat rim is decorated with lotus leafs, bamboo, foliage and insects typical of 'klapmuts group I" by M. Rinaldi. (See similar decorated rims: REF 1.1, 3.1 & 3.2). The backside is decorated with the typical panels containing flowers and the rim depicts a flowering prunus branch. The bottom is marked with the rare Egret mark, reserved for the better quality early kraak-ware. The egret is drawn in a slender form with closed beak (similar to REF 4). Provenance: acquired from a Japanese private collection and could have been used (as described in REF 0.1) in Kaiseki or at tea ceremonies. References: According to Rinaldi: Klapmuts group I dating 1575 to 1610, see similar bowls on Pl. 130, 268 & 266.
