A Western Asiatic restrung necklace comprised of large spherical and rhomboid lapis lazuli beads, each presenting a slight variation in shape, gradually increasing in size towards the centre. The deep blue semi-precious stone is banded with contrasting white striations, creating a duo chrome effect. Some beads even present bright metallic specks. Please note this necklace is unclasped and threaded on string.
Lapis lazuli stone was highly regarded in Mesopotamia and the Near East. Rulers and members of the elite held the custom of being buried with ornaments made partly or entirely of this semi-precious stone. The first use of this beautiful, vibrant rich blue stone dates back to the Neolithic when it was mined in Afghanistan and exported throughout the Mediterranean and South Asia.
Length: 20.5 cm half-length (beaded section); 25.5 cm half-length (total including string)
Provenance: Ex Japanese private collection, deceased, 1970-2010.
