A superb roman marble sarcophagus fragment depicting a female head with a veil drawn over her centrally-parted wavy hair, with straight gaze and head turned to her right. The portrait shows a young lady whose head is covered with a mantle. The cloth hangs down loosely on both sides. Her hairdo shows a large bank of short wavy locks framing her face, covering her ears and streaming backward to disappear beneath the mantle. Her face, with serene expression, features beautiful almond eyes, pursed, full lips with a slight smile and beautiful smooth lines on the cheeks and chin. Hole in the base for fixing with base. Sold without support. Due to the style of the portrait and the treatment of the hair, the piece can be situated at the end of the Antonine dynasty. Condition: Grey veined marble. Part of the nose reconstructed. One single fracture line is restored and goes runs diagonally through part of the first fold of the veil to the left area ( see pictures). The face, a part from the nose, is intact and well preserved. Some surface damage on the top right side of the veil with, minor pit marks. Good overall condition.
