Middeleeuws IJzer Arrowhead, Spaanse exportvergunning (Zonder Minimumprijs)

ITEM: Arrowhead MATERIAL: Iron CULTURE: Medieval PERIOD: 6th - 9th Century A.D DIMENSIONS: 100 mm x 16 mm CONDITION: Good condition PROVENANCE: Ex English private collection, acquired between 1980s - 1990s Medieval arrowheads represent a continuation and refinement of projectile technology from earlier periods, particularly during the European Middle Ages (roughly spanning from the 5th to the 15th century). These arrowheads were crafted with a variety of materials, including iron, steel, and occasionally bronze or other metals. Unlike earlier periods, where iron was a relatively rare and costly material, advancements in ironworking during the medieval era made it more readily available, leading to widespread use in weaponry, including arrowheads. Medieval arrowheads were typically designed for use with longbows, crossbows, or composite bows, and they varied in shape, size, and construction depending on their intended purpose. Medieval arrowheads exhibited a range of designs tailored to specific functions. Broadheads, for example, featured wide cutting edges designed to inflict maximum damage upon impact, making them effective against armored opponents or large game. Bodkin points, on the other hand, were slender and narrow, optimized for penetrating chainmail armor or thick clothing. Barbed arrowheads were designed to cause greater tissue damage and hinder extraction from wounds, increasing their lethality. Additionally, medieval arrowheads often featured socketed or tang constructions, allowing for secure attachment to wooden shafts while facilitating easy replacement or repair in the field. The production of medieval arrowheads required skilled craftsmanship and metallurgical knowledge. Blacksmiths and arrow makers utilized a combination of forging, grinding, and heat-treating techniques to shape and harden the arrowheads, ensuring they could withstand the rigors of use in combat or hunting.
