The small jars with relief or painted decorations are a typology developed in Maya art during the Late Classic period (600-900 A.D.), for the use of the elites. No larger than the size that fits in the hand, their forms are very varied, including some figurative ones that reproduce mythological characters, animals and objects. Referred to as venom flasks or veneneras, medicine, tobacco or pigment bottles, they have been related to specific contents and a use analogous to that of other similar North American vessels has been suggested. Although they are known to have been used to contain tobacco and other dry or powdered substances, their function was broader, as can be deduced from the richness and complexity of their decoration, which often includes inscriptions, and they have often been found in grave goods.
