Constantine X Doukas (or Ducas), Byzantine Emperor from 1059-1067 AD and founder of the Doukid Dynasty. Constantine X's reign faced significant challenges and failed to halt the empire's decline.
He reduced the army and neglected the frontier defenses at a time when the Seljuk Turks were pressing into the eastern provinces and the Normans in Italy were conquering the last remnants of the Byzantine territories.
Histamenon: concave (scyphate) Byzantine gold coin. It featured an image of the reigning emperor on one side and typically a depiction of Christ on the other side, emphasizing the Byzantine Empire's connection between secular and religious authority.
