Oud-Egyptisch Faience Mummiemaskerpaneel met kralen van gevleugelde scarabee en vier zonen van Horus
A fine Egyptian mummy mask panel made of small green, red and black faience beads, restrung in their original arrangement. The panel shows a beaded composition forming a winged scarab, rendered in multi-coloured faience beads. Under the beaded scarab are the four Sons of Horus. Elongated cream faience beads connects the two compositions. The piece would have been part of a larger beaded mummy mask depicting a stylised human face.
Beaded mummy masks would have been placed over the face of the deceased at their burial, mostly for decorative or protective purposes. According to mythology, the Four Sons of Horus each were attributed a different organ to protect. For Imsety, the liver; for Duamutef, the stomach; for Hapi, the lungs; and for Qebehsenuef, the intestines.
Measurements: Circa L 11.3cm x W 10.8cm
Provenance: From Mariaud de Serres collection, Paris 1980-90s.
