Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Centaur Intaglio
Circa 1st-3rd century AD
This bronze ring boasts a flat-section hoop expanding to form a bezel cell set with an oval-shaped intaglio depicting a centaur facing left, with both hands raised and holding a sword.
In mythology, a centaur is a creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse, symbolising the duality of civilization and nature. Centaurs were often depicted as wild and untamed, embodying the forces of the wilderness in contrast to human society.
