Umayyad Bronze Ring with Kufic Script
Circa 7th century AD
This bronze ring is formed of a broad, flat-section hoop, expanding at the shoulders to form a stable bezel support for a large inset with Kufic calligraphy.
Kufic script, named after the city of Kufa in Iraq, is one of the oldest forms of Arabic calligraphy. It emerged in the late 7th century, during the early years of Islam, and was predominantly used until the 12th century. Characterized by its angular, linear, and rectilinear letter shapes, the Kufic script is distinguished by its bold, horizontal strokes and sharp, angular forms. The script's simplicity and geometric nature made it particularly suitable for architectural inscriptions, coinage, and manuscripts.
