Matsukaze Pottery Originally, Matsukaze was founded in the Meiji era in Kiyomizuzaka, Kyoto, as a company that produced ceramics for export, and later produced insulators and chemical porcelain as a ceramics manufacturer. The current founder of Matsukaze, Matsukaze Kajo, is the third generation (his name has been called Kajo for generations, and has changed to Kajo and Katei) and started out as a potter making pottery as an entrepreneur. With his rare talent and tireless efforts, he became devoted to industrial development from the mid-Meiji era, and built the foundations of a major industry in Kyoto called Matsukaze Kogyo, which produces ceramics for export, high-voltage insulators, chemical porcelain, and other ceramic products in modernized factories. *竹に雀 Sparrows on Bamboo Bamboo represents the strong vitality that can withstand wind and snow without losing its evergreen color, and its straight growth, while sparrows are symbols of prosperity of descendants, clan prosperity, and abundant harvests, and are considered to be auspicious designs. This is why bamboo and sparrows are often seen in family crests. Just like the gate to succession where a carp climbs a waterfall and becomes a dragon, sparrows also have a similar auspicious meaning. There is a legend that sparrows, who eat pests and help with good harvests, are the baby phoenix. When sparrows grow up, they become a phoenix.
