Kopke - 40 years old Tawny - Douro - 1 Flaske (0,75 l)

Kopke 40 Years Old Tawny Port 1 x 0.75L 1 Bottle Port Wine WINEMAKER: Carlos Alves. AWARDS/RECOMMENDATIONS 95 Points, Wine Spectator 93 Points, Decanter World Wine Awards 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast 18 Points, Vinho Grandes Escolhas Gold Medal, International Wine Challenge Gold Medal, International Wine & Spirit Competition Gold Medal, Wines of Portugal Challenge Gold Medal, Concours Mondial de Bruxelles WINE VARIETIES: Traditional Douro grapes varieties. VINIFICATION Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation. This takes place in vats (lagares) at a controlled temperature (between 28-30°C) until the right degree of sweetness (baumé) is achieved. At this point, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine. A wine of high quality, made by blending wines of different harvests to achieve the array of sensory qualities that are typical of these aged tawny Port wines. These wines have each matured in oak casks for varied periods of time, with the average age of all the wines in the blend defining the age on the label. The resulting blend expresses the characteristics given by the ageing in wood. TASTING NOTES Deep amber in colour, with a greenish rim. On the nose it is complex, with notes of dried fruits, like raisins, fig and walnut, wrapped in subtle hints of vanilla and honey. On the palate, it is dense, silky and concentrated, with impressive freshness. A powerful and particularly enduring finish. SERVING Irresistible with a starter of foie gras with aubergine and walnuts. A great choice for an endless array of desserts, such as toffee brownies, chocolate and pistachio pavé, or crostini of walnuts with chèvre. Best served at a temperature between 12 and 14°C. HISTORY In 1636, a journey took place between Hamburg and Portugal that would prove to be the root of a long story: Nicolau Köpke arrived in his new country as Consul General of the Hanseatic Cities. Two years later, in 1638, he signed the first bottles of wine sent to Northern Europe. The purchase of a farm in Douro, in 1781, marks the transition from a purchasing company to a large wine producer. Port Wines are gaining importance in the company, quickly becoming the main business. Nicolau Kopke & Co. becomes an example of innovation, integrating wine production and trade in the same company. In 1841, the firm assumed the name of C. N. Kopke, a name which remains as such to this day. In the coming centuries, Kopke will strive to honor its legacy, which has been built with passion across generations. PLEASE NOTE: This is a recurring auction.
