The box is wooden, the interior finished in black lacquer, and the exterior richly decorated with gold leaf, giving it a luminous surface characteristic of high-quality Edo craftsmanship. The lid features a hand-painted design of bellflowers and kuzu blossoms, both celebrated motifs in classical Japanese art. The brass kanzashi is adorned with motifs of a fan and a butterfly. Fans symbolise prosperity and the unfolding of good fortune, while butterflies represent transformation, grace, and joyful renewal. Bellflowers evoke sincerity and steadfast loyalty, and kuzu blossoms convey vitality and the elegant spirit of late summer and early autumn. A wooden storage box is included. There is significant age-related wear throughout. The gold leaf decoration shows rubbing, discoloration, staining, wormholes, looseness, and areas of flaking. The black lacquer interior has large patches of loss and peeling. The brass kanzashi shows patina, tarnish, discoloration, and surface dirt. The glass hairpins have scuffs and small chips.
