The exterior of each tier is decorated with dynamic gold and silver maki-e depicting cranes in flight. In Japan, cranes are revered as auspicious symbols of longevity and prosperity, believed to live for a thousand years. A notable feature of this piece is found on the reverse of one lid: a refined nashiji ground depicting a pine tree and a full moon. The combination of crane and pine, known as shōkaku, has long been cherished in Japanese culture as a highly auspicious motif, suitable for New Year celebrations and formal occasions. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Nashiji uses gold or silver flecks to produce a shimmering surface resembling pear skin. There are lacquer cracks, chips, and areas of peeling mainly around the corners and rims, with some spots where the lacquer has flaked away and the ground is visible. Surface scuffs, small dents, age-related wear, and thinning of the gold maki-e can be seen. The interiors and undersides of the tiers were originally finished in full nashiji but now show noticeable discolouration and fading. One lid also exhibits a noticeable crack along the structural joint line and additional lacquer splitting. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
