Two tiers and one lid feature iris and plum blossoms, while the remaining two tiers and lid depict bamboo and chrysanthemums. Each pair of tiers can also be used independently, offering versatility in display or functional use. The interior of all tiers is coated in rich vermilion lacquer. The motifs each carry auspicious meanings in Japanese culture. Iris represents protection and vitality, traditionally associated with warding off misfortune. Plum blossoms symbolise resilience and renewal, blooming even in the late winter cold. Bamboo conveys strength and steadfast growth, while chrysanthemums are linked to longevity and noble elegance. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate, shimmering designs. There is wear consistent with age, including surface rubbing, blemishes, small lacquer cracks, and noticeable cracks on the iris-and-plum lid, with one of its supporting feet missing on the underside and a prominent crack beside it. Notably, there is visible splitting and separation (delamination) along the rim edges and corners of the tiers, where the lacquer has chipped away to expose the underlying base material. Some areas of maki-e show thinning, and small chips, scuffs, minor dents, and overall lacquer wear are present. Please refer to the photographs for details. Dimensions: approx.
