Tyskland - Hele Skandinavia, Finland, de baltiske statene, Nord-Tyskland og Nordvest-Russland.; Johann Baptist Homann - Scandinavia complectens Sueciae, Daniae & Norvegiae Regna - 1701-1720

Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) — Scandinavia complectens Sueciae, Daniae & Norvegiae Regna — Original hand-coloured copper engraving — Nuremberg, ca. 1715–1724 Description: Original early 18th-century map of Scandinavia by the celebrated German cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724), engraved and published in Nuremberg between 1715 and 1724, shortly after the cartographer was granted the Imperial Privilege (cum privilegio Sac. Caes. Maj.). This detailed copper engraving covers Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, extending to parts of Russia and northern Germany. It includes the Baroque title cartouche with allegorical figures, a crowned shield and a lion — one of Homann’s most recognisable decorative compositions. Hand-coloured in contemporary outline, the map displays fine engraving quality and excellent preservation of detail. ⸻ Condition • Original copper engraving on laid paper • Period hand outline-colouring • Vertical centre-fold (as issued) neatly flattened • Only minor edge nicks and light toning consistent with age • Excellent overall condition considering age (over 300 years) • No major stains, tears or paper losses • Map edges visible within frame, confirming full margins and authenticity ⸻ Framing & Provenance • Mounted in a mid-20th-century Swedish frame, likely from the 1950s–1960s, by Flodins, Stockholm (label on reverse) • The even paper tone and immaculate surface strongly indicate decades of stable framing with minimal exposure to light or moisture • Sight size (map only): ≈ 50 × 58 cm • With frame: ≈ 53.5 × 61.5 cm • Frame in very good condition, with original paper backing and hanging wire intact ⸻ Rarity & Historical Context Homann’s Scandinavia complectens Sueciae, Daniae & Norvegiae Regna is one of the most desirable northern-European regional maps of the early 18th century. This example represents an early state, bearing the cartographer’s own imprint (not the later “Homann Heirs”), and was produced before 1724. Original hand-coloured copies of this period, preserved in such fine condition, are uncommon. ⸻ Approximate Date ca. 1715–1724 Cartographer / Publisher Johann Baptist Homann, Nuremberg Engraving Technique Copper engraving with original outline colouring Condition (Catawiki scale) Very good (A–): minor age signs, no major defects Framed Yes (vintage frame from Stockholm, mid-20th century) ⸻ Shipping & Packaging • The map will be shipped framed and securely packed. • Tracked international shipping with insurance • Professional care to ensure preservation of the original frame and glass
