Since 1873, it has been known as Tsugaru-nuri, also referred to as Kara-nuri. In 1975, it was officially designated as a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and in 2017 it was recognised as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan. One of the most distinctive features of Tsugaru lacquerware is its durability and refined beauty. The technique of "togidashi kawari-nuri" (polished multi-layer lacquering) creates striking patterns by polishing through multiple layers of coloured lacquer, revealing their rich tones and depth. The sweet box is decorated on the exterior with togidashi kawari-nuri, while the interior is finished in vermilion lacquer. The tray is finished with togidashi kawari-nuri on the top and sides, while both pieces are finished with black lacquer on the underside. The interior of the sweet box shows minor cracks in the lacquer at the corners. Minor scuffs and signs of use are present, but overall the set remains in good used condition. Please check the photos for further details. Dimensions of Box: approx. H 7.4 cm W 5.3 cm D 5.3 cm Dimensions of Tray: approx.
