Shin'en Garden at the Heian Shrine 平安神宮神苑 - Limited Edition 61/200 & Hand-Signed - Tomikichirō Tokuriki 徳力富吉郎 (1902-2000) - Japan

We cannot ship to the USA due to suspension of the postal services from Malta. (Please read below). Kyoto and its landmarks were arguably the favorite subject for Tomikichiro Tokuriki. He made several series of views of Kyoto. This particular series, Twelve Themes of Kyoto, is from his latter period, and combines all his talents and experience. These are now hard to find in unused condition. Heian Shrine (平安神宮, Heian Jingū) has a relatively short history, dating back just over a hundred years to 1895. The shrine was built on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the capital's foundation in Kyoto and is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city, Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867). Heian is the former name of Kyoto. Behind the main buildings there is an attractive, paid garden with a variety of plants, ponds and buildings. The garden's most striking feature are its many weeping cherry trees, which bloom a few days later than most other cherry trees, making the garden one of the best cherry blossom spots in Kyoto around the tail end of the season, which is usually around mid April. (source: japan-guide.com) Tomikichiro Tokuriki was a modern Japanese woodblock printmaker. He represented the 12th generation of a Kyoto artisan family designated as the official Kyoto print artists for the famous Honganji Temple. He graduated from Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting in 1924. After World War II, he established the Matsukyu Publishing Company to produce and distribute his own prints and other Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga pieces. Tomikichiro Tokuriki was an influential figure in Japan's contemporary print movement. He was the official artist of the Honganji Temple, and his work has been commissioned for various temples throughout Japan, including the famous shrines at Ise. His prints are in the permanent collections of the Museum Fine Arts Boston and the Museum of Modern Art New York. This print is in excellent condition. It has never been framed and always stored in a dark place. Due to the introduction of the import tariff system in 2025, Maltapost has suspended all postal services to the USA until further notice. If you live in the USA, you will need to give an alternative address outside of the USA for shipments. Otherwise, please refrain from bidding.
