Begravd hage lanterne 活け込み燈籠 (ikekomi’dôrô) - Misaki’dôrô (kapp lanterne) 岬燈籠 - Stein, Granitt - Japan - Edo-perioden (1600-1868)

A great, tall four-part granite garden lantern, an ikekomi’dôrô 活け込み燈籠 (buried lantern) of the Misaki’dôrô 岬燈籠 (cape lantern) type, carved from grey mottled granite. The lower sao 竿 (post) is intended to be partially buried in the ground, anchoring the lantern securely and symbolising chi 地 (earth). Above sits the chûdai 中台 (platform), representing sui 水 (water). The cylindrical hibukuro 火袋 (fire box) follows, with two opposite openings, one square and one circular in shape. This section symbolises ka 火 (fire) and originally housed the light source. The lantern is crowned by a domed kasa 笠 (umbrella roof), edged with square blocks, representing fû 風 (air) as the form rises toward the sky. Dimensions: Height 114 cm; Diameter 49.5 cm; Buried base 20 cm The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one is from the Edo period (1600-1868). It is in a very good condition with an attractive outdoorsy patina. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity. Please note: Due to the holidays, shipping and handling times may be longer. Thank you for your understanding.
