Kanban butikkskilt - Lakkert tre - Japan - Taishō-perioden (1912 – 1926)
A Japanese carved wooden kanban 看板 (shop sign) for a teashop, featuring a black lacquered circular panel decorated with the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, commonly known as Daruma 達磨 (482-539) in red, white, and black, placed above the stylised kanji for tea 茶 rendered in gold lacquer.
Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926).
Dimensions:
Height 60.5 cm, Width 56 cm, Depth 4 cm.
In very good condition, with minor lacquer losses consistent with age and outdoor display. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
Such kanban were traditionally displayed outside shops to attract customers and advertise the establishment’s trade.
