A top quality, large, rococo icon from a church iconostasis depicting the birth of the Mother of God. The icon and frame are carved out of one massive pine wood panel. Most likely made for the iconostasis of a parish or convent church in Saint Petersburg. The rococo style of this icon matches with the Winterpalace in St Petersburg designed by the Italian architect Rastrelli ( 1700-1771). This icon is pure rococo style and period and must have been made circa 1770. The painting is of superb quality and in an excellent state of preservation. The guilding is set on red bolus.
