Offered here is a scarce and historically important Middlesex political token issued in 1797, commemorating King George III’s attendance at the national thanksgiving service held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, on December 19, 1797.
The service was organized to acknowledge the British naval victories during the early years of the French Revolutionary Wars.
This token is catalogued as Middlesex 197 in Dalton & Hamer’s classic reference work The Provincial Token-Coinage of the 18th Century and is notably scarcer than the common political issues of the period.

This inscription celebrates Britain’s victories—particularly naval successes—during the conflicts with Revolutionary France.
The design is typical of political tokens meant to promote patriotism and national unity.
Historical Significance
This piece was struck at the height of the Conder Token period (c. 1787–1797), when private manufacturers produced token coinage due to shortages of official small change.
Beyond its monetary role, this token carries a clearly propagandistic message—an early form of public relations for the Crown during wartime.
Tokens of this type were often distributed or sold as commemorative souvenirs of major events, and fewer survive today in such attractive condition.
