This is an authentic Japanese woodblock print by the celebrated master Utagawa Toyokuni III (also known as Kunisada). This piece is titled "Numazu: Nimochi Heisaku" and belongs to his renowned series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no uchi).
The print depicts a powerful close-up of the character Nimochi Heisaku against the scenic backdrop of the Numazu station. The composition is a brilliant example of the "Yakusha-e" (actor portrait) style for which Toyokuni III was legendary.
The condition of this print is exceptional. It is not backed (no lining on the reverse), allowing the original texture of the washi paper to be appreciated. The colors remain remarkably vibrant, including the rich reds and deep blues of the kimono patterns. The fine details of the carving, such as the hair lines and the patterns on the clothing, are crisp and well-preserved.
Artist: Utagawa Toyokuni III (Kunisada) Series: The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Subtitle: Numazu - Nimochi Heisaku Date: Mid-19th Century (Edo Period) Condition: Excellent. Unbacked. Very good colors and preservation. Please refer to the photos for details.
