The Sellwood 16 drachms bearing partial mint names behind the bust represent the final coinage of Phraates II. Their eastern mint at Tambrax reflects the prolonged and initially successful military campaign conducted against the Sakae in northeastern Parthia. With his headquarters likely established at Tambrax, Phraates II advanced the Sakae as far as Margiana before ultimately being defeated and killed in battle.
Mint location: Tambrax was situated in ancient Hyrcania, near the southeastern coast of the Caspian Sea, and is generally identified with or near modern Gorgan, Golestan Province, northeastern Iran.
