Spania. Felipe III. 8 Reales 1612–1621. Sevilla. D. NGC VF.

Spanish cob 8 Reales struck in Seville during the reign of Felipe III el Piadoso (1598–1621), one of the most important silver coinages of the early modern world. The 8 Reales formed the backbone of global trade in the 16th and 17th centuries and circulated widely across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Under Felipe III, Seville functioned as Spain’s principal mint for New World silver, supplying vast quantities of coinage that underpinned the Spanish Empire’s economic power. Cob coinage of this period is characterized by its irregular shape and areas of weakness, the result of hand-struck production methods. These features are inherent to the type and contribute to its historical authenticity and appeal among collectors. This example is NGC certified and encapsulated, graded VF Details with Environmental Damage, clearly stated on the holder. Despite this, the coin retains strong remaining design elements and clear attribution. ⸻ Specifications • Country: Spain • Kingdom: Reino de España • Ruler: Felipe III el Piadoso (r. 1598–1621) • Denomination: 8 Reales • Mint: Seville • Date: circa 1613 • Metal: Silver • Weight: 27.00 g • Diameter: 37 mm • Die axis: 3 h • Type: Cob coinage • Certification: NGC • Grade: VF Details • Comment: Environmental Damage • Reference: Cayón 4900 • Provenance: Ex Leu Numismatik – Web Auction 31 From the old stock of a late Swiss coin dealer. ⸻ Shipping & Packaging Shipping is handled securely and professionally.
