Skulptur, Grand Tour Obelisk - 41 cm - Marmor - 1880

Grand Tour Obelisk – Hand-carved Marble– Circa 1880–1900 A distinguished example of 19th-century Grand Tour decorative arts, this hand-carved solid marble obelisk embodies the Victorian passion for antiquity and Egyptomania. Collectible obelisks of this period were either acquired by British travellers during cultural Grand Tour journeys or crafted domestically in the United Kingdom as refined interior homage pieces to the ancient world. The monument features a beautifully tapered cream-toned marble shaft with warm honey-gold mineral veining, crowned by a precisely cut pyramidion (pyramidal top). It rests on a dramatic architectural composition of contrasting black marble elements, including a stepped base and a square mid-collar plinth, giving the piece a striking cabinet presence reminiscent of museum gallery display objects. The stone displays natural mineral marbling (not stained, painted, or colour-enhanced), confirming authenticity and craftsmanship. The stepped base profile provides excellent stability and a perfectly proportioned silhouette for interior placement. Condition: Great pre-loved condition with light, age-appropriate signs of handling. No structural damage, cracks, chips, or restorations. The marble shows a soft lived-in patina consistent with long decorative display use. Fully intact and immediately ready to place in a collection, interior, or display cabinet. The photo's are a part of the description. Dimensions & weight: approx. 41 x 8.5 x 8.5 cm (h x w x d) approx. 2.45 kg total weight Historical Context During the 18th to 19th centuries, the "Grand Tour" served as an educational rite of passage for young aristocrats and affluent scholars, particularly from Britain, the Netherlands, and Germany. Italy was a key destination, where craftsmen produced high-end quality souvenir objects inspired by ancient architecture. Obelisks symbolised antiquity, erudition, and cosmopolitan taste, and were popular as desk and cabinet ornaments in libraries, salons, and early curiosity collections. Shipping & Handling • Will be professionally packed with great care • Dispatched next business day with registered and insured post • Suitable for global shipping A strong interior statement piece with timeless classical presence, equally compelling in a study, display cabinet, or curated decorative arts collection. High-end quality and fine historical character.
