José de Pazos - Lego Pop LIMITED EDITION

LEGO POP In this piece, I wanted to combine several iconic elements of pop culture to convey a message of authenticity and self-motivation. The central character is a Lego figure, a universally recognized toy that we can all identify with. On his torso, I wrote the phrase ‘Be the BEST version of YOU!’ It’s a simple but powerful reminder that, in a world saturated with images and expectations, we must work on being our best selves. On the left, I included a female face inspired by Roy Lichtenstein’s comic book style, with its characteristic Ben-Day dot pattern. This woman seems trapped in melancholy, saying: ‘The melody haunts my reverie’. I like the contrast this creates with the central message of the work: while the Lego character suggests a positive path, the woman evokes sadness and the desire for something more, reminding us that personal growth is not always easy. I also included Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup can, a symbol of mass consumption and commercial art. For me, it represents that duality between the authentic and the superficial, between what we consume and what we really are. By adding it, I wanted to provoke a reflection on the influence that these cultural symbols have on our identity and how sometimes we get lost in them. The vibrant colors and silhouette figures in the style of Keith Haring in the background celebrate life and movement. Haring always used his art to talk about unity and joy, and I wanted to bring that energy to my piece. These characters represent the connection we all share, the dance of life, and the constant effort to find our place in the world. Finally, at the bottom, I added smiling characters as a nod to the idea of self-acceptance and the importance of enjoying the process. Sometimes, in our quest to be better, we forget that we also need to have fun and accept ourselves as we are. With this work, I hope that those who see it take away a message of hope and motivation. We live surrounded by symbols and messages that tell us how we should be, but ultimately, being the best version of oneself is a personal decision that we all have to make. My art is my way of reminding us all that, although culture influences us, we decide who we want to be.
