The stone seal is moderately transparent. The stone is, or resembles Shoushan stone. One side of the seal is engraved with characters and a small stylized bamboo bush. Origin: Recently, we had the privilege of acquiring a richly varied collection of old/antique Chinese stone seals. These remarkable seals have been brought together over many years by a private collector. They consist of good quality authentic Chinese seals made from various colored mineral stones, including possibly shoushan stone (larderite). The dating varies; but they are all from the Qing period to the 20th century. Carved by: Hu Peiheng (1892-1962). Dated: 1943, Autumn. About: Hu Peiheng (June 1892–March 1962), whose family name was Xiquan, also known as Heng, with the courtesy name Peiheng, was a Mongolian native from Zhuo County, Hebei Province. His ancestors were grain merchants, so he moved to Beijing. He founded the Baowenzhai Painting and Calligraphy Shop in Beijing's Liulichang. He was a professor at North China University, a lecturer at Beijing Normal University, and a professor at the Peking Art College. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as an executive director of the Beijing Chinese Painting Research Association and a painter and member of the Beijing Painting Academy's executive committee.
