Shomei Tomatsu - Kingdom of Mud - 1978

Kingdom of Mud Shomei Tomatsu Asahi Sonorama/1978/Japanese/210*220*15 The “Mud Kingdom” is a collection of photographs by Shomei Tomatsu, one of Japan's leading postwar photographers. Shomei Higashimatsu is one of the leading documentary photographers in postwar Japan, who has always maintained a high level of awareness of issues and a relentless quest to discover the original image of Japan and the Japanese people, using “Nagasaki” and “Okinawa” as his subjects. His works include “11:02 NAGASAKI,” “Oh! Shinjuku,” ‘Japan,’ ‘I am a king,’ ‘Pencil of the Sun,’ and many other masterpieces. This book consists of illustrations taken during a month-long visit to Afghanistan in 1963 as a correspondent for a magazine, and is the second book in the Afghanistan series following “Salaam Aleikom” published in 1968. 59 out of 103 illustrations are previously unpublished works. This is a collection of works depicting nomadic Afghanistan, where the people of today, the Japanese, are invaded by material civilization and domesticated like livestock, while the people of Afghanistan, though not wealthy, tame their livestock and live freely and unrestrainedly.
